Novice teachers’ needs should be met. They need a lot about classroom management, planning and evaluation tools. Therefore, a mentor represents support to a novice teacher. Presenters will tackle the induction and mentoring training experience of Dumyat. A mentor and a mentee will be available to narrate their real experience.
Abstract:
Mentoring: A Live Experience from Dumyat
Mentoring evolves around the idea of providing all types of support to novice teachers. It's a mutual relationship between a mentor who gives experience and support and a mentee who needs a lot professionally and personally. They both benefit from each other.
Presenters will:
A) give a brief idea about the induction and mentoring training. They will shed light on the mentoring relationship.
B) discuss in detail how the induction and mentoring training was carried out in the governorate of Dumyat. It was a workshop where a great number of novice teachers representing different subjects were trained for sixty hours on methodology. They practiced different teaching strategies and used observation tools and reflection techniques.
The workshop targeted three components:
First, novice teachers worked individually, in pairs and in groups. They gave presentations to discuss their ideas with each other. Portfolios were kept to register their performance progress.
Second, mentors were trained on the mentoring component. They were able to identify the meaning of the mentoring concept and recognize the roles and responsibilities of mentors in the Egyptian context. Mentors identified the three-stage observation technique and evaluation tools. That component lasted for six running days.
Third, supervisors evaluated novice teachers' performance. They learnt how to apply different assessment forms to be used with novice teachers.
During the Demo, a CD documenting the whole training will show the experiment of Dumyat. A mentor and a mentee will be ready to answer, during an open discussion, questions regarding the experience they went through.
