    Journey to the Centre of the Earth Ch. 4

    1. When did the sun shine? How was it helpful to the 3 men?
    It shone on the 28 of June. The shadow of Scartaris showed them which chimney to go down.
    2. How many days did they wait for the sun shine?
    Three days.
    3. How long did the clouds cover the sun?
    Three days.
    4. What did the rocks that Lidenbrock examine prove?
    They proved that he was right and that the centre of the Earth can not be hot.
    5. Why was Axel so excited by the frozen lava?
    Because it sparkled like jewels.
    6. Why was Axel worried? What did Lidenbrock tell him?
    He was worried because they had used up about half of their water. Lidenbrock expected to find underground springs and plenty of water.
    7. Which of the two paths did the three men enter?
    The eastern path.
    8. Why was Axel worried that they had used up half of their water?
    Because his uncle expected underground springs of water and so far they hadn’t found any.

    He put them into a bag and tied the bag to a rope. Then he threw the rope down the chimney.
    17. What did professor Lidenbrock say about the centre of the Earth?
    He said that it can not be hot and the scientists who think it is hot are wrong.
    18. How did Axel feel when he and his uncle didn’t find any water?
    He felt worried.

    It was nearly midnight before they reached the bottom of the chimney.
    23. When did Axel begin to enjoy the journey?
    When they entered the passage and walked through the frozen lava which looked like jewels.
    24. How could the three men find their way in the darkness?
    By using a strong electric torch.
    25. Where did Axel see the frozen lava?
    He saw it when he entered the small passage.

    11. They were tired and exhausted when they reached the bottom of the chimney.
    12. With the help of ropes, the three men descended the chimney.
    13. They still went down although it was getting darker and darker.
    14. Professor Lidenbrock was sure that all the scientists who think that the centre of the Earth is hot are wrong.
    15. The bottom of the chimney was getting narrower.
    16. Sneffels had last erupted in 1229.
    17. Their descent was long and tiring.
    18. Walking through the passage was like walking in a box of jewels.
    19. The clouds covered the sun for three days.
    20. They tied a long rope to the edge of the chimney so that they could descend the chimney.

    21. The professor had examined the rocks and found out that he was right and that the centre of the Earth can not be hot.
    22. Professor Lidenbrock brought a strong electric torch in order to light their way and to be able to see in the dark.
    23. There was no shadow of Scartaris to guide the three explorers as the clouds covered the sun for three days.
    24. The electric torch which the professor had brought helped them to see in the dark.
    25. The clouds covered the sun for three days so they were delayed and professor Lidenbrock was angry.
    26. In the centre of the Earth the ray of the sun made the lava walls sparkle like jewels.
    27. They found their way in the darkness by using a strong electric torch.
    28. Axel was worried about running out of water but the professor told him that there will be plenty of water later on.
    29. The travellers went into the middle chimney because at noon the shadow of Scartaris fell on it.
    30. Although all the scientists think that the centre of the Earth is hot, Lidenbrock thinks that it is cold.
    31. Professor Lidenbrock thought that the centre of the Earth was cold but all the other scientists thought it was hot.
    32. The rocks that the professor saw proved that he was right and that the centre of the Earth can not be hot.
